Consumers who purchase and install specific products in existing homes can receive a tax credit for 30% of the cost up to $1,500, for improvements “placed in service” starting January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. Many of the most energy-efficient appliances cost more initially, but they'll save you money in the long run. Expect to keep most major appliances between 10 and 20 years. A more efficient appliance soon pays for itself. Lower monthly utility bills over the lifetime of the appliance will more than off-set a higher purchase price.
